Chiang Mai Areas Explained for Visitors — Nimman, Old City, Santitham, Riverside

Chiang Mai is small but the character changes completely between neighbourhoods. If you only have a few nights, picking the right area matters more than picking the right venue. Here is how locals actually describe them.

Old City (inside the moat)

The square kilometre surrounded by the moat and old walls. Temples, guesthouses, cafes, walking streets.

- Good for: first visit, temples, walking everywhere, Sunday Walking Street market
- Evenings: relaxed bars, live acoustic music, early close (most places quiet by midnight)
- Prices: mid, heavily tourist-oriented
- Watch out for: the same three streets get repetitive after two nights

Nimmanhaemin (Nimman)

North-west of the Old City, around Chiang Mai University. Modern Thailand rather than old Thailand.

- Good for: specialty coffee, design shops, co-working, younger crowd, Thai students and digital nomads
- Evenings: rooftop bars, craft beer, live bands, later hours than Old City
- Prices: highest in the city, roughly Bangkok level
- Note: Soi 9 and Soi 11 are the main eating and drinking lanes. One Nimman is the big open plaza everyone means when they say "meet at Nimman"

Santitham

Between the Old City and Nimman. Almost no tourists.

- Good for: seeing how Chiang Mai people actually live and eat
- Evenings: street food, local beer bars, karaoke, prices half of Nimman
- Prices: cheapest honest prices in the city
- Note: very little English spoken. Google Translate camera works well on menus

Riverside (Charoenrat / Wat Ket)

Along the Ping River, east side.

- Good for: dinner with a view, quieter evenings, couples
- Evenings: restaurants with live jazz and Thai folk, slower pace
- Prices: mid to high
- Note: beautiful at sunset, genuinely worth one evening

Chang Klan / Night Bazaar

South-east of the Old City.

- Good for: souvenir shopping, big hotels, convenience
- Evenings: the night bazaar itself, plus large beer gardens with cover bands
- Prices: tourist prices, negotiable at market stalls
- Watch out for: the most touts of any area in the city

Hang Dong / San Kamphaeng (outside the city)

Where many long-term expats and Thai families live.

- Good for: hot springs, waterfalls, quieter stays, larger houses
- Note: you need a scooter or car. Not walkable

Practical notes for visitors

- Getting around: Grab and Bolt both work. Red songthaews are 30-40 THB per person for short city hops — flag one, tell them where, agree the price
- Best months: November to February is cool and dry. March to April is burning season with genuinely bad air quality — check AQI before booking. June to October is green season, warm rain in the afternoon
- Sunday Walking Street: Ratchadamnoen Road, from about 16:00. The single best evening in the city if it falls during your stay
- Saturday Walking Street: Wua Lai Road, silver-making district, smaller and less crowded
- Alcohol sales: legally 11:00-14:00 and 17:00-24:00. Convenience stores follow this strictly
- Closing times: most licensed venues close at 01:00. Nimman and a few riverside spots run later
