Chiang Mai Neighbourhoods Explained — Old City, Nimman, Riverside, Santitham

People book a hotel before they understand the city and then spend the trip in taxis. Here is how the areas actually differ.

Old City (inside the moat)
Temples, guesthouses, walking streets on weekends. Walkable, but the inner streets are quiet after 22:00.
Best for: first visit, temple sightseeing, short stays.
Downside: tourist pricing on almost everything, and traffic noise on the moat road.

Nimmanhaemin (Nimman)
The modern district near Chiang Mai University. Coffee shops, co-working spaces, craft beer, boutique hotels, Maya mall.
Best for: digital nomads, cafés, nightlife that is not rowdy.
Downside: the most expensive area in the city and getting more so every year.

Riverside (Charoenrat / Faham)
Along the Ping River. Older wooden buildings, riverside restaurants, live music, a slower pace.
Best for: a quieter stay, dinner with a view, couples.
Downside: you will need transport for most things.

Santitham
Between the Old City and Nimman. Where a lot of locals and long-stayers actually live. Cheap food, cheap laundry, no tourist markup.
Best for: stays of a month or more, and anyone on a budget.
Downside: few sights, not pretty, but very practical.

Chang Phueak / north of the moat
Local markets, the famous Cowboy Hat Khao Kha Moo stall, night market food.
Best for: eating like a local.

Hang Dong and San Kamphaeng (outside the city)
Villas, pools, mountain views, coffee plantations. You need a car or scooter.
Best for: families, longer stays, people who want space.

Rough guidance on where to stay

• 3 to 5 days, first visit — Old City
• 1 to 4 weeks, working remotely — Nimman or Santitham
• Honeymoon or quiet trip — Riverside
• With children — Hang Dong or a resort outside the moat
