Tourist Scams in Chiang Mai 2026 — The Ones That Still Work

Chiang Mai is a genuinely safe city. Violent crime against tourists is rare. What is not rare is being quietly overcharged. These are the ones we still see every month.

1. "The temple is closed today"
A friendly man near a major temple tells you it is closed for a ceremony and offers a tuk-tuk tour to "another temple" instead. The temple is open. The tour ends at a gem shop or a tailor who pays him commission.
What to do: walk to the entrance and check yourself.

2. Scooter rental damage claims
You return the bike and the shop points at a scratch that was already there and demands thousands of baht.
What to do: photograph and video the entire bike before you ride away, including the underside and existing scratches. Never leave your actual passport as deposit — offer a copy plus a cash deposit. Reputable shops accept this.

3. Tuk-tuk with no agreed price
Agree the fare before you get in. Every time. A short hop inside the moat is typically 60 to 100 THB, not 300.

4. Jet ski and rental damage (in beach destinations, but Chiang Mai has the rafting version)
Same principle: film the equipment before use.

5. Gem, tailor and "government promotion" shops
There is no government gem promotion. There never was.

6. Bar bill padding
Check the bill line by line. Ask for the menu again if a drink seems to have changed price. This is uncommon in normal bars and common in a few specific venues near the moat.

7. ATM and card skimming
Use ATMs attached to a bank branch during opening hours. Thai ATMs charge 220 THB per foreign withdrawal, so take out larger amounts less often.

8. Fake police / "show me your wallet"
Real police do not need to inspect your cash. Ask to go to the tourist police office. Tourist Police hotline: 1155.
